Leadership is a privilege, but it comes with responsibility.
One of the most important and often overlooked foundations of leadership is trust.
Without trust, influence falters, and leadership is in danger of becoming about control. As the saying goes,
“People don’t follow positions, they follow people.”
I’ve experienced this personally. I’ve built trust with people around me, only to see it eroded by my own words or actions. These experiences taught me that trust isn’t just about what you say, it’s more about who you are and how you consistently show up.
So, how do you build trust in a leadership role?
Here are some practical steps that I try to follow:
1. Think Before You Speak
Proverbs 15:28 says,
“The heart of the righteous weighs its answers, but the mouth of the wicked gushes evil.”
Taking a moment to pause before speaking demonstrates wisdom and respect. Words spoken in haste can break trust faster than any mistake ever could.
2. Respect Those You Lead
Respect is the soil where trust grows. Philippians 2:3-4 reminds us,
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”
Leadership isn’t about proving authority. It’s about valuing people.
3. Understand What’s Really Going On
People follow leaders who understand them. Listening, asking questions, and observing the unspoken challenges people face creates connection. Ignoring context leads to misjudgment and lost credibility.
As John Stott said,
“Leadership without understanding is tyranny in disguise.”
4. Be Secure in Yourself as a Leader
Insecurity shows up as defensiveness, micromanagement, or inconsistency, all of which erode trust.
A secure leader admits mistakes, takes responsibility, and stays calm in the face of challenge.
1 Corinthians 16:13 encourages us: “
Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong.”
True strength builds confidence and trust in others.
Trust Is a Journey, Not a Destination
Building trust isn’t a one-off event. It takes consistency, humility, and integrity over time.
Augustine, the early church father, wrote,
“The measure of love is to love without measure.”
Trust works the same way. Invested patiently, it grows, and when broken, it takes intentional effort to restore.
As a leader, your influence is only as strong as the trust people place in you.
Be intentional in your words, actions, and decisions. Lead with integrity, respect, and wisdom. Lead yourself well, and you’ll become a leader worth following.
